US Government Donates $250,000 Worth of IT Equipment to Enhance Ethiopian Justice Sector.
Addis Ababa: The US government has donated $250,000 worth of IT equipment to bolster Ethiopia’s justice sector. This donation, which includes laptops, printers, and scanners, is aimed at supporting the judicial systems in the Tigray, Somali, Amhara, and Afar regions. US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, officially handed over the equipment to representatives from regional and justice bureaus.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the initiative is spearheaded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and is designed to improve access to justice and transparency in Ethiopia’s judicial system. During a ceremony at the US Embassy in Addis Ababa, Helina Zeru, Ethiopia Country Director for INL, emphasized America’s dedication to supporting justice sector reforms in Ethiopia at both regional and federal levels.
Helina Zeru remarked, “Today’s handover serves as a testament to our partnership, and we hope this is just the beginning.” Ambassador Massinga also highlighted the sign
ificance of the collaboration, citing the crucial role technology plays in enhancing judicial services and upholding the rule of law. “We hand over information technology equipment to the Regional Justice Offices and courts from our friends in Afar, Amhara, Tigray, and Somali region,” he stated.
He further encouraged the recipients to continue their efforts in creating a more responsive, efficient, and accessible justice system for all Ethiopians. “Ensuring the rule of law and increasing access to justice is a priority for the United States government,” he added, noting that these initiatives will bolster stability and peace in regions experiencing considerable challenges.
This donation is part of ongoing efforts, following a previous initiative that provided smart court equipment to some benches of the Federal Supreme Court. Additionally, INL and USAID have facilitated transitional justice public consultations across Ethiopia, which led to the adoption of a transitional justice policy earlier this year.
T
he handover ceremony was attended by representatives from various regional justice offices and federal judicial officials. The US government reaffirmed its continued commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s justice sector, highlighting the importance of efficient and accessible judicial systems in promoting long-term peace and stability.
