U.S. Breaks Ground for New Maternal and Childcare Centre in Kumasi
Kumasi – Madam Virginia Palmer, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art maternal and child center at the HopeXchange Medical Center in Kumasi. The facility aims to enhance maternal and child healthcare services in the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the new center will feature a labour and delivery suite, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, inpatient and outpatient wards, and an adolescent clinic. The HopeXchange Medical Center Ghana is a joint venture involving the United States Government, Ghana’s Ministry of Health, Christian Health Association of Ghana, Ghana Health Service, the Governments of Malta and Italy, Yale University, HopeXchange Foundation, and various NGOs. Serving approximately four million people, the Center is a crucial healthcare provider in the region.
The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has invested $3.5 million in the project. Madam Palmer highlighted the United States’ commitment to improving the health and lives of mothers, babies, and children in Ghana, with an annual investment of over $12 million. She underscored the significance of this investment in quality maternal and antenatal care for healthier mothers and newborns.
Additionally, the U.S. launched a Women’s Cancer Center at HopeXchange Ghana in 2019, which serves as a regional hub for medical training, research, and patient care. The United States remains Ghana’s largest bilateral development partner, with over $150 million in bilateral assistance in 2023 dedicated to various sectors, including health, economic growth, education, governance, and security.
