Transport, Logistics Sector Aims to Support Ethiopia’s Economic Growth: Minister Alemu
ADDIS ABABA: Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime has announced that Ethiopia’s transport and logistics sector is actively working to provide services that align with the nation’s expanding economy. The minister’s remarks were made during a 100-day performance review of the Council of Ministers for the first quarter of 2017, which was attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the review highlighted the positive impacts of a comprehensive macroeconomic reform program on various sectors. Minister Alemu emphasized that these reforms have enabled the transport and logistics sector to enhance its operations effectively. In particular, the sector has focused on ensuring the timely delivery of fertilizer to farmers and providing adequate inputs to producers, which is crucial for the agricultural industry.
The minister outlined several initiatives undertaken in the first quarter, including the development of dry port, sea, land, and air transport systems. The construction of
storage facilities for perishable goods is also underway, in response to advances in the agricultural sector. Alemu noted that various activities are being conducted to expand logistics services to meet the demands of the growing economy.
Efforts to modernize public transport services are ongoing, with collaboration from ethio telecom to boost transparency and accountability. Additionally, steps are being taken to facilitate seamless import-export trade by exploring alternative port services. Ethiopia is also making strides in road development, ensuring connectivity with neighboring countries to support these initiatives.
