The Gov’t of Ethiopia Remains Committed to the AU-led Peace process
The government of Ethiopia has, in practical terms, demonstrated its commitment to resolving the conflict with the Tigray rebel group peacefully through the auspices of the African Union. This commitment is founded on Ethiopia’s longstanding confidence in the organisation’s potential to resolve this conflict peacefully. Ethiopia believes that the principle of “finding African Solutions to African Problems” shall dictate the policies of those involved in the conflict and those advocating for a negotiated peace.
Ethiopia is very grateful to the African Union Commission Chairperson and the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa for organizing the ongoing peace talks in South Africa. The Government of Ethiopia also extends its thanks to the Government of South Africa for providing the venue and the logistical arrangements.
While the Government of Ethiopia remains committed to the peace talks and finding comprehensive resolution of the conflict, it should be underscored that the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be subject to negotiation.
It is to be recalled that the TPLF violated the humanitarian truce unilaterally declared by the Government of Ethiopia on 24th of March 2021, by launching a third-round offensive and invading parts of Amhara and Afar regions. The fact remains that TPLF’s repeated military incursions have endangered civilians in the Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions. Accordingly, the Government of Ethiopia was left with no option other than defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as safeguarding the constitutional order.
It should also be underlined again that if given another chance, the TPLF will rearm and regroup for another round of destruction. The group should therefore be told, in clear terms, that there should not be other ways, other than committing itself for the peace talks; and to stop mobilizing the younger generation for continuous destruction.
