The Government of Ethiopia Scales up Humanitarian Assistance to the People in Tigray Region
It is to be recalled that the Government of Ethiopia has declared an indefinite humanitarian truce on March 24, 2022, to facilitate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian assistance in the Tigray Region. This has also demonstrated the government’s commitment to peace and its readiness to resolve the conflict in a sustainable way.
Ever since the declaration of the indefinite humanitarian truce, the World food Program (WFP) has managed to deliver a total of 335 trucks of much-needed food, nutrition, and fuel to the Tigray Region. According to WFP’s recent statement, a further 94 trucks are en route to the Region. On the other hand, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered its third round of convoys to Mekelle on April 30, 2022, all carrying food and medical supplies. Moreover, ICRC commissioned a total of 54 cargo flights to deliver medical items and life-saving food to the Region.
The Ministry of Health of Ethiopia in collaboration with WHO, ICRC, UNICEF, UNHCR, and the World Vision is also sending medical items and pharmaceuticals to the Region. Over the past two months alone, 36 million Birr worth of medical supplies has been delivered to the Region.
While appreciating the support extended by partners thus far, the government encourages the international community to step up efforts to mobilize sufficient resources for the over 20 million people who need humanitarian assistance across the country due to conflict and drought.
