Tema Industrial Lions Club and Tema General Hospital Partner to Raise Diabetes Awareness

The Tema Industrial Lions Club, in collaboration with Tema General Hospital, has launched an initiative to raise public awareness about diabetes, its potential health complications, and methods for management and prevention. The joint effort aims to educate the community on the importance of combating this chronic condition.

According to Ghana News Agency, a specialty club within District 418-Ghana of Lions International, and health professionals from Tema General Hospital, the awareness campaign involved holding placards with messages encouraging diabetes management at key traffic intersections in Tema Community 11 and in front of the Tema General Hospital.

To further support this initiative, the Lions Club donated an air conditioner and curtains to the Diabetic Clinic of Tema General Hospital. This donation is part of their ongoing efforts to bolster the government’s health delivery services. The club also refurbished consulting and treatment rooms at the clinic, enhancing the facility’s capabilities to serve patients effectively.

The donation and refurbished facilities were handed over by Mr. Solomon Antwi, the first Vice President of the club, and Mr. Kobina Dabi-Appiah, the Zone Six Chairperson of District 418-Ghana of Lions International. They were joined by Ms. Gifty Nkrumah, President of the Club, and other club members during the presentation.

Dr. Richard Anthony, the Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, expressed his gratitude to the Tema Industrial Lions Club for their support since the club’s charter in 2022. He urged for the continuation of the collaborative relationship between the hospital and the club and called on other organizations to follow the Lions International’s example.

As part of the awareness activities, patients at the Outpatient Department (OPD) were educated on diabetes’ impact on vision, the relationship between the brain and the eye, and how excessive sugar in the body can damage the eye and other body parts.

Ms. Nkrumah took the opportunity to enlighten the public about the mission and vision of Lions Clubs. She detailed the causes and types of diabetes, their effects, and treatment options. She also encouraged individuals who are passionate about service to join the Lions Club to make a more significant impact in communities and the world. Additionally, she appealed to corporate entities and individuals to collaborate and partner with the club to support the hospital and alleviate some of the challenges faced by the healthcare sector, emphasizing that the government alone cannot shoulder these responsibilities.
