Splenda Ghana Supports Diabetes Care with Donations to Eleven Health Facilities

Accra, Ghana – Splenda Ghana, known for its importation of Splenda Zero Calories and Splenda Stevia Sweeteners, has made a significant contribution to diabetic health facilities in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions. The company donated products worth thousands of cedis to eleven health facilities, marking its commitment to supporting diabetes care and management.

According to Ghana News Agency (GNA) , the donation was part of Splenda Ghana’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, aligning with its goal of promoting healthy living. The recipient facilities include Mamprobi Polyclinic, Lapaz Community Hospital, Kaneshie Polyclinic, Achimota Hospital, Maamobi General Hospital, Madina Polyclinic, Tema Community 22 Clinic, La Polyclinic, Ashaiman Polyclinic, the Eastern Regional Hospital, and Matthew 25 Clinic. In addition to the sweetener products, the company also presented glucometers to selected health facilities.

Mrs. Maabena Webb, Managing Director of Brighter Purpose Group Limited and Team Lead for Splenda Ghana, stated that this initiative was also part of the activities to commemorate the 2023 World Diabetes Day (WDD). WDD, observed annually on November 14th, aims to increase global awareness about diabetes, a chronic disease with severe impacts on various organs. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that around 24 million adults in Africa currently live with diabetes, with projections suggesting a rise to 55 million by 2045.

The donation of Splenda Stevia Sweetener, a natural sugar substitute, is part of Splenda Ghana’s effort to support medical advice for diabetics and non-diabetics regarding the consumption of regular sugar, which is high in calories and raises blood glucose levels. Mrs. Webb emphasized the importance of this donation, considering the high number of undiagnosed diabetes cases in Africa, as indicated by WHO statistics.

Mrs. Webb, who is also a member of the Blue Circle Voices Network, a diabetes advocacy group under the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), shared her personal experience with gestational diabetes and encouraged Ghanaians to adopt healthy lifestyles. This includes eating healthy, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight, and avoiding smoking.

Mr. Baffour Ohene-Kena, Head of Administration and Human Resources at Splenda Ghana, spoke about the 2023 World Diabetes Day theme, ‘Know Your Risk.’ He emphasized the importance of Ghanaians prioritizing health through better lifestyle choices and advised individuals living with diabetes to adhere to their doctors’ instructions and stay informed about their condition.

Established in November 2020 as a subsidiary of Brighter Purpose Group Limited, Splenda Ghana serves as a channel for driving CSR initiatives in Ghana and across Africa.
