SOMALIA’S ROAD TO THE EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY

Now some good news for the Federal Republic of Somalia and its citizens as it seeks to solidify its position within the East African Region . . . The leaders of the East African Community – EAC – member states have officially adopted the report of the Special Committee on the verification of Somalia’s application to join the regional bloc during the 21st Extra-Ordinary Summit of The Heads of State held in Bujumbura, Burundi.

Following the approval, the heads of state instructed the EAC Secretariat and Council to initiate the technical process for Somalia to officially join the regional body.

Since his election in May last year, President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has prioritized the formation and strengthening of regional and international ties.

In July 2022, just two months after his election, President Mohamud attended the EAC Summit held in Arusha, Tanzania as an honorary member.

We are proud as a nation that in less than a year, The Federal Government of Somalia has gained the trust of EAC member states and is now well on its way to being granted full member status. This is indeed a triumph for the country and the region as a whole.

Somalia’s accession to this esteemed regional body, in addition to the obligations that come with it, will bring forth benefits in terms of diplomacy, social integration, communication, trade, economy and education among others. Somali businesspersons will have the opportunity to operate in all 8 member states.

Movement for Somali citizens within the region will also be greatly facilitated as the Somali passport is set to become part of the East African Community Passport Union.

We look forward to taking our rightful place in the East Africa Region and playing our part in the EAC’s joint prosperity, cooperation and sustainable development.
