President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has announced a major shake-up in the Somali National Army, appointing new leaders and promoting a senior officer. In a presidential decree issued on Monday, Mohamud named Brigadier General Madey Nurey Sheikh as the Deputy Commander of the army and Brigadier General Dayah Abdi Abdulle as the Commander of the Infantry. Abdulle, who was previously a Colonel, was also elevated to the rank of Brigadier General. The president praised the new appointees for their dedication and service to the nation, and urged them to work hard to restore peace and stability in the country. He also called on all Somalis, civilians and soldiers alike, to support the army and join the fight against the militant group Al-Shabaab, which has been waging a violent insurgency for over a decade. The president said that the government was committed to reforming and strengthening the security sector, and thanked the international partners for their assistance and cooperation.
