Renovated Africa Hall in Addis Ababa Becomes Hub for Research and Tourism

ADDIS ABABA: The newly renovated Africa Hall in Addis Ababa has emerged as a significant research center and tourism destination, highlighting Africa’s rich history and diverse art. The transformation is expected to benefit not only Ethiopia but also the broader African continent, according to architects involved in the project.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and UN Secretary General António Guterres inaugurated Africa Hall last Monday, celebrating it as a landmark of liberation and a symbol of Pan-African unity. A discussion on the hall’s role in Ethiopia’s architectural and cultural landscape was held today at the renovated venue.

Habtamu Getachew, President of the Architects Association, stated that the renovation has made Africa Hall a prime destination for visitors and researchers from various African countries and beyond. He emphasized its historical significance as a tribute to all Africans and noted Ethiopia’s pivotal role in the Pan-African movement and ongoing develo
pment initiatives.

Dawit Banti, a lecturer and researcher at Addis Ababa University, remarked on the hall’s historical background, describing its construction as a significant moment in shaping Addis Ababa’s identity. He highlighted Ethiopia’s leadership in promoting African unity, with Africa Hall standing as a testament to this effort.

Fasil Giorghis, an Associate Professor of Architecture, underscored Africa Hall’s role as a symbol of Africa’s unity and progress, serving as a venue for diplomatic meetings and cultural events. He pointed out the hall’s architectural and historical importance, marking it as a crucial landmark in Addis Ababa’s evolution toward modernity.

The recent renovations have preserved the hall’s historical essence while incorporating modern enhancements to meet contemporary needs. This positions Africa Hall as a central venue for future collaborative events across the continent. Originally inaugurated in 1961 by Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie, the hall is known as the birthplace
of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), and has been a witness to numerous pivotal moments in Africa’s history.
