Rehabilitative Training Begins for Ex-Combatants in Amhara Region

AMHARA REGION: Former combatants in the Amhara region have embarked on a rehabilitative training program at the Dabat Rehabilitation Center, following the regional government’s persistent appeals for peace and reconciliation.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the extremist group had previously caused significant hardships by disrupting essential services, including education and development, by blocking transportation routes. The Amhara Regional Government had repeatedly sought peaceful resolutions to the conflict through negotiation and dialogue.

Responding to these overtures, around 900 former combatants from the North Gondar Zone have chosen to reintegrate into society, expressing regret for their past actions. The Dabat Rehabilitation Center, coordinated by Fasil Dilnessa, is providing comprehensive training aimed at equipping these individuals for a peaceful return to their communities.

The participants, now committed to peace, have acknowledged the destructive nature of their previous activities. They expressed remorse for the harm caused, particularly the disruption of educational opportunities for children, and conveyed a desire to contribute positively to regional development.

Fasil Dilnessa highlighted the program’s focus on national affairs, current issues, and fostering a harmonious society. He emphasized the potential for these rehabilitated individuals to serve as role models, encouraging others to abandon violence in favor of peace.

Community leaders, including elders and religious figures, welcomed the trainees, offering blessings and urging them to aid in the establishment of enduring peace and stability once their rehabilitation is complete. The regional government remains committed to resolving conflicts through peaceful dialogue and reconciliation efforts.
