Prime Minister Abiy Arrives in Russia for BRICS Summit

KAZAN: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia, along with First Lady Zinash Tayachew and a ministerial delegation, has arrived in Kazan, Russia, marking Ethiopia’s inaugural participation in the 16th BRICS Summit. The summit, held in Russia’s fifth-largest city, is set to be a significant platform for discussions on multilateralism and international cooperation.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia’s recent membership in BRICS has opened new avenues for engagement within both the BRICS Members and BRICS+ platforms, as well as in bilateral meetings. The summit is expected to gather around 20,000 delegates from over 30 countries, highlighting its importance as a major international forum. The three-day event will feature intense diplomatic discussions and high-level bilateral talks, providing leaders an opportunity to address pressing global issues.

The current composition of BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, represent
s a significant portion of the world’s population and economy. Collectively, these countries account for approximately 46 percent of the global population and over 36 percent of the world’s GDP, as estimated by global financial institutions. The summit in Kazan aims to offer a renewed vision of multilateralism, reflecting the growing influence of these nations on the world stage.
