Premier Expresses Ethiopia’s Readiness in Fostering Multilateralism as BRICS Family Member
KAZAN: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed underscored that Ethiopia is prepared to engage constructively in fostering multilateralism as the newest member of the BRICS family. The 16th BRICS Summit is taking place in Kazan, Russia, where dozens of leaders have gathered for three days of intense diplomatic discussions and high-level bilateral talks as part of the international forum which offers a new vision of multilateralism.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, in his remarks, Prime Minister Abiy said that this gathering represents hope in the pursuit of effective multilateralism to address the pressing global challenges faced today. ‘As the newest member of the BRICS family, Ethiopia is prepared to engage constructively in fostering multilateralism that serves both developed and developing nations, anchored in the principle of equity,’ he stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted the rapidly evolving world with a multitude of crises that demand wisdom and a thoughtful approach. He noted the challenges economic growth
in developing countries face due to unfair global financial systems, emphasizing rising inequality, inflation, and unemployment as pressing issues. Furthermore, he pointed out the ignored calls for climate action and climate finance amidst a deepening crisis.
Abiy expressed optimism about the BRICS bloc’s potential to create opportunities for an equitable world. He described BRICS as a transformative force, with its collective voice representing nearly half of the global population and over a third of global GDP. He suggested that intra-BRICS trade, investment, and tourism have the potential to ignite economic growth and serve as a model for cooperation in addressing global challenges.
The Prime Minister advocated for leveraging diverse economies and high growth potential to achieve economic gains and uplift people. He also supported proposals by President Vladimir Putin and President Xi Jinping to enhance cooperation in the development of artificial intelligence.

edited consideration of membership requests to the New Development Bank to enhance alternative financing for crucial infrastructure projects. He revealed that BRICS is uniquely positioned to champion reforms addressing the concerns of developing nations and ensuring their voices are heard globally.
Ethiopia, he said, particularly emphasizes the reform of the UN Security Council, advocating for Africa’s representation, in line with the common African position. Abiy concluded by reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to actively participate in realizing a shared vision for a more equitable and inclusive multilateral world.
