PM Abiy, UN Chief Inaugurate Renovated Africa Hall in Addis Ababa

Addis ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and UN Secretary-General António Guterres today inaugurated the newly renovated Africa Hall, a symbol of Pan-African unity and a key historical site in the heart of Ethiopia’s capital. The event marks a significant moment for Africa Hall, known as the birthplace of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), and highlights its enhanced role as a cultural and diplomatic hub.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the renovation of Africa Hall was undertaken to preserve its historical significance while updating its facilities to meet modern standards. The project included the installation of state-of-the-art conferencing equipment, compliance with current fire hazard requirements and building codes, improved accessibility for people with disabilities, enhanced lighting, waterproofed ceilings, and the restoration of original furnishings from the 1960s.

Originally inaugurated in 1961 by Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie, Africa Hall has been a venue
for numerous pivotal moments in African history. The comprehensive renovation also introduces a new visitor’s center, a permanent exhibition, and a cinema room designed for screenings and public events, aiming to educate visitors about Africa’s history, the African Union, and the United Nations.

The revitalized Africa Hall not only preserves its historical essence but also embraces a sustainable future, positioning itself as both a top-tier conferencing venue and a cultural heritage site with significant tourism potential for Ethiopia. This reopening is a step towards enhancing Africa’s narrative on a global stage through a blend of history, diplomacy, and modernity.
