PM Abiy Discusses Ethiopia’s Desires for Sea Outlet with BRICS Leaders

ADDIS ABABA: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has articulated Ethiopia’s aspiration for access to the sea in discussions with leaders from BRICS member countries, highlighting a strategy based on reciprocal benefits. This dialogue occurred during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, where the prime minister participated alongside a ministerial delegation.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy engaged in both bilateral and multilateral talks with BRICS leaders and other partners, emphasizing Ethiopia’s goal for sea access as a matter of shared interest. Government Communication Service Minister Legesse Tullu reported that the prime minister underscored the necessity of sea outlets for Ethiopia, citing the country’s history, geography, population, and economic development.

The minister noted that Ethiopia’s request is framed around mutual benefit. Additionally, Prime Minister Abiy’s proposal for reforming the international financial system garnered acceptance among summit participants, with lead
ers, including Abiy, advocating for a more inclusive financial system and adopting a unified stance.

Beyond the sea access discussions, Ethiopia presented its ongoing reforms in economic and institutional capacity building. The summit, as noted by the minister, provided an avenue for Ethiopia to gain unexpectedly favorable outcomes in economic, trade, and investment sectors.

Minister Legesse concluded that the decisions and common positions formed during the BRICS Summit align with Ethiopia’s national interests, further strengthening the country’s strategic goals.
