PM Abiy Ahmed and CAF President Patrice Motsepe Tour New Stadium in Addis Ababa
Addis ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe visited the Adey Ababa stadium, currently under construction, in a significant event attended by various Ethiopian officials and sports figures today.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the visit was part of a broader initiative as Ethiopia prepares its bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The construction of the Adey Ababa stadium is seen as a pivotal element in Ethiopia’s campaign to secure hosting rights for the prestigious continental football tournament. Culture and Sport Minister Shewit Shanka and Ethiopian Football Federation President Isayas Jira were also present during the tour, emphasizing the national importance of the project.
The visit comes after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s announcement last June that Ethiopia had officially submitted its application to host AFCON. The Prime Minister highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to meet the requirements of hosting such a signifi
cant event. Additionally, he mentioned the enlistment of former Nigerian football stars, Daniel Amokachi and Nwankwo Kanu, who are well-known for their careers in the English Premier League and other European clubs, as ambassadors to bolster Ethiopia’s bid.
The timing of the visit is strategic, as the 46th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football is set to commence tomorrow, 22nd October 2024, which could be crucial for Ethiopia’s hosting aspirations. The assembly will likely discuss various aspects pertinent to the future of football in Africa, including prospective host nations for upcoming tournaments.
