Our country’s annual demand for cooking oil is estimated at 906 million liters

(MOTI) – The Minister of Trade and Industry of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Melaku Alebel, said, “We will work to completely replace the demand for edible oil with domestic production!” He said the country’s demand for edible oil is 906.5 million liters a year, which is a joint venture between government and private investors over the past three years. The number of refineries in the process of refining has been increased from 14 to 30.

He said the annual production capacity of oil refineries has been increased from 89 million liters to 1.25 billion liters, he said, adding that the success of the sector will fully meet the country’s oil demand.

Melaku said total oil demand has increased from 5 percent to 40 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). It has completely eliminated the dollar and created a culture of cohesive manufacturing industries.

Melaku added that 4,000 new jobs have been created through the refining of crude oil in the sector.
