Minority in Ghana Parliament Praises Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for ‘Heal Komfo Anokye’ Healthcare Initiative

Kumasi – The Minority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana’s Parliament has expressed commendation for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and his ‘Heal Komfo Anokye’ initiative. This initiative is aimed at renovating the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, and underscores the Asantehene’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.

According to Ghana News Agency, a Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, the initiative reflects a visionary approach to healthcare. During a press briefing in Parliament, Akando, who is also the NDC’s Member of Parliament (MP) for Juaboso, led members of the Caucus on the Health Committee in applauding the Asantehene’s efforts. He encouraged Ghanaians to support this initiative, which prioritizes healthcare in the country.

Akando called on other leaders to follow suit and urged the government to realign its priorities, especially regarding critical healthcare projects like the Komfo Anokye maternity block. He highlighted the dire state of healthcare facilities in Ghana, noting that the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) lacks functional imaging equipment, including MRIs, CT scans, and x-ray machines.

The MP pointed out that the preliminary 2023 Harmonised Health Facility Assessment revealed only 15 percent of national hospitals in Ghana receive routine maintenance for infrastructure. He also mentioned the neglect of crucial projects, like the Komfo Anokye maternity block, as a significant challenge in the country’s healthcare sector.

KATH, established in 1954, is an essential medical institution in Ghana, serving as a referral center for 12 of the 16 regions in the country. The ‘Heal Komfo Anokye’ initiative is a significant step towards improving the quality of healthcare infrastructure in Ghana.
