Livestock prices have risen as brokers and traders have extended the trading process.
We visited the Adama Livestock Marketing Center to inspect the 2022 Ethiopian New Year market and noticed that the price of sheep and goats has increased from last year’s holiday market. Adama City Livestock Marketing Expert, Asnaku Bekele, said the reason for the increase is that brokers and traders between suppliers and consumers have corrected the transaction in a way that does not add value. According to the expert, each animal is sold more than four times from the supplier to the consumer.
According to her marketing information, 5,000 goats, 6,000 to 10,000 sheep and 76,000 to 80,000 oxen were sold at Adama Market Primary Livestock Marketing Center on September 10 and 4, 2021.
Buyers and sellers we spoke to said that the price of livestock has risen sharply from last year’s New Year’s Eve market due to the high demand for fodder.
According to Abebe Tadesse, Livestock Marketing Promotion Expert with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, it is possible to reduce inflation by eliminating unwanted market actors by directly connecting suppliers and consumers. Abebe said the ministry is working with the relevant institutions to stabilize the local livestock market and strengthen the export process.
