Japanese Embassy Supports Ethiopian Girls Skaters with Skateboard Donation

ADDIS ABABA – The Japanese Embassy in Addis Ababa has donated skateboards to Ethiopian Girls Skaters (EGS), a group breaking gender stereotypes in sports by empowering underprivileged girls through skateboarding. The donation aims to promote the sport in Ethiopia and encourage more girls to participate.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the EGS group is dedicated to creating a supportive community for girls who are often marginalized in sports, especially in activities typically dominated by boys. The donation of skateboards by the Japanese Embassy is a gesture to bolster this initiative and foster the growth of skateboarding among girls in the Ethiopian capital.

Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ito Takako, emphasized Japan’s commitment to supporting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. She expressed hope that the Ethiopian Girls Skaters will continue to enjoy and excel in skateboarding, potentially competing in international events, including the Olympics, and forming friendships through sports with Japanese skaters.

Ito Takako highlighted the potential for future international interactions, such as Ethiopian skaters meeting their counterparts from Kasama, Japan, in competitions or visiting each other’s countries, to nurture their friendship through sports.

Debebe Barud Dera, Special Advisor of Social Protection at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, pointed out the importance of supporting girls in sports. He stated that girls who are encouraged and supported in sports can become role models, inspiring others and transforming their lives through athletic endeavors.

He called for the creation of an environment that fosters self-development and resilience, ensuring that girls’ rights are protected and they are motivated to pursue their dreams.

UNICEF Representative to Ethiopia, Aboubacar Kampo, announced plans to build a new skaters park in Addis Ababa. This project is intended to further promote skateboarding in the region and empower girls by providing them with a dedicated space to practice and develop their skills.

The contribution from the Japanese Embassy marks a significant step towards advancing gender equality in sports in Ethiopia, providing young girls with opportunities to participate in skateboarding and grow in a supportive community.
