Institute of Ethiopian Studies Commences Pan-African Exhibition

Addis Ababa University (AAU) Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) organized a commencement program to Pan-African exhibition at Mekonnen Hall of the University on May 25, 2022.

Takele Meried (PhD), Director of IES, on his opening remarks said that Pan-Africanism from its inception has a concept of movement until today; has promoted unity, brotherhood, solidarity, and created a scene of shared common historical as well as cultural destiny among Africans and the black people throughout the globe.

According to Dr. Takele, the victory of Adwa is often considered as a land mark and beginning of the modern Pan-African movements elsewhere in the world; following the victory of Adwa, Pan-African association was created in 1897 and carried out different conferences in different parts of the world.

The Pan-African conferences organized by independent African countries that held in 1950s and 1960s, positively impacted the independence of Africa and the realization of the Organization of Africa Union (OAU), now African Unity (AU), in 1963, Dr. Takele added.

“The Pan-Permanente Exhibition to our Museum mainly takes us back to 1880s and largely to 1960s and tries to show Ethiopia’s efforts and the efforts of African Heads of States to the unity of Africa, which can be considered as one of the outcomes of Pan- Africansim. The IES Museum works towards the realization of the cultural agenda,” he said.

H. E. Nezha Alaoui Mohammdi, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Ethiopia, by her unity message, addressed that the kingdom of Morocco has been committed to strengthening its historical, cultural, political and economic relationship with the countries of the south.

Deata Desta Yeshimebet Meghoo (PhD), Consultancy & Associates’ at AU Pan-African unite and the founder of permanent African Exhibition at IES, noted that the victory of Adwa has a prominent role for the concept of Pan-Africanism in our continent Africa and worldwide as well.

Wubayehu Mamo (Engineer), delegate of AAU President, on his closing remarks said that the role of AAU is vital for the development of Africa and the concept and movement of Pan-Africansim. The program by itself showed the enthusiastic efforts of the University that demonstrated to African development tasks; it always stands for every developmental tasks of Africa, he added.
