IGAD PSD ORGANISE CONSULTATIVE WORKSHOP ON UNSCR 1325 AND NATIONAL ACTION PLANS FOR TECHNICAL LEVEL STAFF OF GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS OF ETHIOPIA
25 JULY 2021 ( Bishoftu, Ethiopia): The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Peace and Security Division (PSD) this morning kick started three days National Consultative Workshop based on a policy brief on implementation of UNSCR 1325 for technical level Ethiopian Authorities with the objective to discuss the overall situation in Ethiopia regarding existing follow up mechanisms of the implementation of UNSCR1325 and to devise a concrete roadmap towards a National Action Plan (NAP) or an equivalent instrument for the purpose.
Hon. Siraj Fegessa, Director of IGAD Peace and Security Division (PSD), in his opening remarks highlighted that the national Consultative workshop will enable Ethiopia to look in to its own mechanisms to follow up on the implementation of UNSCR1325 holistically through National Action Plans or a similar instrument that can be identified during this consultation or pave the way towards that end.
Mrs. Everina Woldemeskel, Senior Expert of Women Capacity Building at Ministry of Women, Children and Youth of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in her opening speech remarked that Ethiopia is working on involving Women in the Peace and Security issues. She added that the Country is working towards enhancing the participation of women to bring sustainable peace in the Country.
IGAD PSD commissioned an assessment in mid-2019 to assess the level of implementation of UNSCRS 1325 and 1820. The result of this assessment as well as the policy brief that was produced for Ethiopia, as a result of the assessment will be discussed during these three days.
IGAD had been constantly working on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) for a long time in the region. There have been significant progresses especially in the women in Peace and Security area since IGAD focused on implementing Regional, Continental and Global instruments to this end.
