HPR Launches Citizen Forum on GERD’s Role to Pan Africanism.

Addis Ababa: The House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) launched today the first of its kind parliamentary citizen forum on hydropolitics, focusing on the government and public role concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its significance for Pan-Africanism. In his opening remarks, House Speaker Tagese Chafo emphasized that the GERD represents Africa’s efforts to eliminate poverty and ensure sustainable development and prosperity.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Tagese Chafo highlighted that upon completion, the GERD will not only illuminate millions of Ethiopian homes but will also encourage regional cooperation in renewable energy, thereby advancing industrialization. He also reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to prioritizing diplomatic dialogue based on mutual benefit and respect.

The forum saw participation from top government officials, university presidents, scholars, and members of parliament. The discussions centered around the GERD’s potential to develop a regional electricity
grid, enhancing energy security and promoting economic integration across the region.

Additionally, cooperation on the GERD is expected to strengthen economic ties among the Nile Basin countries, leading to increased trade and investment. Collaborative projects in agriculture, infrastructure, and renewable energy could provide mutual benefits to all riparian states.

This Parliamentary Citizens’ Forum marks the beginning of a series of monthly deliberations on crucial agendas significant for both the country and the continent.
