High-level Ethiopian Delegation Engages in Talks with IMF Leaders on Economic Reforms

WASHINGTON: A high-level Ethiopian delegation, led by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and National Bank Governor Mamo Mihretu, engaged in discussions with Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and senior officials from the IMF’s Africa Department. The talks focused on ongoing economic reforms in Ethiopia and future cooperation between the nation and the IMF.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the delegation also included Teklewold Atnafu, Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister, and Eyob Tekalign, Finance State Minister, among other officials. The discussions were held at the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington D.C. During the meetings, Finance Minister Ahmed Shide expressed gratitude for the IMF’s support, which he stated has been crucial in advancing Ethiopia’s reform agenda.

Minister Shide highlighted the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in driving the macroeconomic reforms, noting the inclusive governmental approach and stakeholder engagement essential for t
he successful implementation of comprehensive reforms aimed at modernizing the economy and promoting inclusive growth.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership and the progress achieved under Ethiopia’s homegrown reform agenda. She cited strong growth and efforts to address macroeconomic challenges and open up the economy. Georgieva emphasized that Ethiopia’s reforms could serve as a model for other countries and reaffirmed the IMF’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s transition, recognizing the tangible progress made by the government.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthen collaboration in areas critical to Ethiopia’s long-term development and economic growth.
