Accra, Ghana – Professor Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, the Director of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) at the University of Ghana, has been appointed as an Inaugural Board Member of the Science and Impact Advisory Group of the UK-CGIAR Centre. This significant appointment reflects the growing recognition of Ghanaian expertise in global scientific research and development.
According to Ghana News Agency, the appointment was announced in a statement issued by WACCI and shared with the Ghana News Agency. This development comes in the wake of the UK-CGIAR Centre’s launch, announced by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the Global Food Security Summit in London on November 20. The summit, hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, focused on addressing crucial issues in global food security.
Professor Danquah expressed his honor at being selected as one of the inaugural members of the Science and Impact Advisory Group of the new Centre. His appointment signifies the recognition of his extensive experience and expertise in the field of agricultural science and improvement.
The UK-CGIAR Centre aims to enhance global food security by fostering collaborations between UK scientists and those from CGIAR, a global partnership engaged in agricultural research for development. The Centre’s Science and Impact Advisory Group plays a pivotal role in guiding the strategic direction of the UK-CGIAR. It also provides independent assessments and opinions on project proposals, assisting the Secretariat in decision-making processes for the Centre.
Professor Danquah’s involvement in this advisory group is expected to bring valuable insights and contributions from his experience in crop improvement, particularly benefiting the realms of food security and agricultural research at a global scale.
