Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative Lauded by WHO for Environmental and Health Impact
ADDIS ABABA: The World Health Organization (WHO) has praised Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, calling it a cornerstone for environmental development and improvements in public health. The initiative’s efforts, including the planting of 40 billion saplings over six years, have contributed to a substantial increase in the country’s forest cover and are seen as a model for climate resilience and health protection.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Dr. Maria Nera, Director of Environment, Climate Change, and Health at the WHO, highlighted the initiative’s role in addressing global climate challenges such as droughts and excessive rainfall, which have adverse effects on human health. She emphasized the importance of international cooperation and sustainable development in combating climate change, noting Ethiopia’s commitment to environmental stewardship through its Green Legacy Initiative.
Ethiopia’s forest cover has seen a notable increase, reaching 23.6%, which Dr. Nera described as a testament to the co
untry’s dedication to sustainability. She commended Ethiopia’s efforts, stressing the green initiative as a critical component for environmental development and health. The initiative’s focus on tree planting and afforestation plays a vital role in protecting water bodies, reducing waterborne diseases, and mitigating the effects of climate change on human health.
Dr. Nera also pointed out the global significance of Ethiopia’s initiative, serving as an inspiration for other countries to mitigate climate change. The benefits of planting saplings include protecting biodiversity, reducing environmental damage, and lowering the risk of diseases such as respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological conditions.
Ethiopia’s broader health initiatives, including efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality and increase vaccine access, were also commended by Dr. Nera. She reaffirmed WHO’s continued support for Ethiopia’s health and environmental efforts, emphasizing the positive steps taken to improve health coverag
e and protect public health.
