Ethiopian National Defense Force Affirms Role in Regional Stability

ADDIS ABABA: The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has reiterated its commitment to fostering regional peace and stability, according to a statement made by the Ministry of Defense. During a briefing to military attachés and diplomats in Addis Ababa, Major General Teshome Gemechu highlighted the ENDF’s historical and ongoing efforts in ensuring both national and regional security.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Major General Teshome emphasized the resilience of the Ethiopian National Defense Force, which has historically navigated numerous challenges to defend the nation’s interests. He stated that the ENDF’s experiences have equipped the military to maintain Ethiopia’s security consistently. Beyond its domestic responsibilities, the ENDF is actively involved in promoting peace across Africa, serving as the largest contributor to United Nations peacekeeping missions in countries such as Somalia and South Sudan.

Major General Teshome underscored the ENDF’s dedication to regional peace, reflecting
Ethiopia’s commitment to Africa’s stability. He also recognized the necessity of international cooperation to tackle contemporary security threats, including terrorism and cross-border crimes. The Ethiopian National Defense Force is committed to continuing its participation in peacekeeping missions both regionally and globally.

Looking forward, General Gemechu expressed the ENDF’s intention to enhance its capabilities to protect Ethiopia’s national interests while contributing to continental peace and stability. The briefing also offered an overview of Ethiopia’s journey toward maintaining national stability, highlighting the development of its defense forces, governmental transitions, generational shifts, and institutional progress.
