Ethiopia Seeks to Host 2029 Africa Cup of Nations, Says PM Abiy
ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia is keen on hosting the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations, as announced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Speaking at a dinner reception at the National Palace for leaders and participants of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the nation’s commitment to welcoming the prestigious tournament.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy warmly welcomed delegates to Ethiopia, emphasizing the country’s historical role in African independence and its contributions to the Pan-African movement. He noted Ethiopia’s participation in global platforms like the League of Nations and the United Nations, positioning it as a pillar of African unity and cooperation.
The Prime Minister reiterated Ethiopia’s status as one of the founding nations of African football and its commitment to the sport’s development. He formally requested that the 37th Africa Cup of Nations be held in Ethiopia in 2029, citing the country’s strong tradition of hospitali
ty and adequate infrastructure.
Ethiopia has previously hosted major international tournaments and is undergoing significant economic growth, with an 8.1 percent GDP increase in the previous fiscal year and a projected 8.4 percent growth for the coming year. Efforts to modernize cities and construct new stadiums, along with renovating existing facilities, are part of the broader plan to ensure readiness for the event.
Beyond the football matches, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted Ethiopia’s rich history, cultural heritage, and scenic landscapes as attractions for visitors. He remarked on football’s potential to unite people globally, expressing Ethiopia’s readiness to showcase its unique position in the sport and athletics.
