Ethiopia Plans Comprehensive Studies on Transboundary Groundwater Resources
ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia is embarking on an initiative to ensure sustainable water management, as the Ministry of Water and Energy has announced plans to conduct extensive studies on the equitable use of transboundary groundwater resources. This move is part of the country’s response to its growing population and the increasing demand for water driven by urbanization and climate change.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, State Minister of Water and Energy, Abraha Adugna, stressed the need for effective leadership in managing water resources to guarantee their sustainable use. Adugna noted Ethiopia’s wealth of underground and surface water resources, emphasizing the necessity of their proper identification and protection for future generations. As surface water supplies face mounting pressure, the Ministry seeks to investigate groundwater alternatives, particularly in areas prone to water shortages.
A recent topography map highlighted the importance of transboundary groundwater resources, prompting the Ministr
y to initiate detailed studies to evaluate these critical water sources. Abraha expressed optimism about the potential for underground water to fulfill the diverse needs of communities nationwide.
He also reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to collaborating with neighboring countries to ensure fair and equitable access to shared water resources, promoting regional cooperation and sustainability. This proactive strategy not only addresses Ethiopia’s immediate water needs but also establishes a foundation for long-term water security, signaling a significant step toward a sustainable future.
