Ethiopia Establishes Coastal Guard to Tackle Waterborne Crimes

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia has announced the formation of a new Coastal Guard police force aimed at curbing crimes on the nation’s waterways, as revealed by Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael. This initiative was disclosed during a recognition and award ceremony for police officers who excelled in crime prevention over the past Ethiopian Fiscal Year.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Commissioner General Gebremichael emphasized the necessity of a police service operating on boats to effectively prevent crimes occurring on water. Drawing from the experiences and research of developed countries, Ethiopia has organized this specialized force to enhance crime prevention efforts on its waterways.

The Commissioner General highlighted that preparations, beginning with army recruitment, are underway for the service to commence operations shortly. He also noted that with the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, there will be increased potential for safeguarding tourist destinations
with a dependable police force. Furthermore, the establishment of the Coastal Guard is expected to contribute to the development of a competent and competitive police organization prepared for future missions.

Additionally, the Federal Police has entered into a contract with the Defense Engineering Industry Corporation to construct fast police boats, further bolstering their capabilities to address waterborne crimes.
