Ethiopia Demonstrates Progress in Food Sovereignty Through Strategic Initiatives

ADAMA: Ethiopia is showcasing significant advancements in its quest for food sovereignty, exemplifying its capacity to achieve this vital goal, according to Bikila Hurisa, Head of the Democratic System Building Coordination Bureau at the Office of Prime Minister. The nation’s efforts, particularly over the past five years, have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity, a crucial component for ensuring food security in the East African region.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, a pivotal half-day panel discussion titled “Boost Productivity, Safeguard Sovereignty” is currently taking place in Adama city, Oromia region. This event is hosted by the Ethiopian News Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, and the Ethiopian Diaspora Service. Bikila emphasized that food sovereignty remains a priority in Ethiopia’s development agenda, with recent initiatives yielding tangible results.

Bikila highlighted the strides Ethiopia
has made towards reducing dependence on imported consumer goods, particularly through improvements in local wheat production and the initiation of exports. He stressed the importance of continued collaborative efforts and platforms to support these advancements, which are crucial for the sustainable realization of food sovereignty.

Seife Derebe, the CEO of Ethiopian News Agency, underscored the agency’s role in facilitating discussions on national issues. He noted that the agency has organized more than 14 national and international panel discussions in various languages, with today’s forum being part of this ongoing initiative. The event will delve into the relationship between food sovereignty and national sovereignty, its alignment with disaster risk reduction policies, and the role of media in achieving food sovereignty.
