Ethiopia and China Collaborate on Climate Change Initiatives at COP29.
Baku: Ethiopia and China engaged in bilateral discussions at the “Belt and Road” Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Side Event during COP29 in Baku, focusing on innovative solutions and partnerships for a sustainable future. Ethiopia’s Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa, highlighted the country’s Green Legacy Initiative, which has successfully planted over 40 billion trees since 2019. This initiative has increased Ethiopia’s forest cover to 23.6 percent while also creating job opportunities and uplifting communities.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia’s efforts to promote regional green integration through renewable energy exports to neighboring countries such as Kenya, Sudan, and Djibouti were also emphasized. China’s Special Envoy on Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin, reiterated China’s commitment to green and low-carbon development under the Belt and Road Initiative. This commitment involves collaborative projects with Ethiopia and other nations to advance global climate goals.
