Deputy PM Temesgen Hails Ongoing Scientific Research on Earthquakes Related Issues in AAU
Addis Ababa: The Institute of Geophysics, Space Science, and Astronomy at Addis Ababa University has been engaged in promising advancements in scientific research related to earthquakes, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh remarked. Temesgen, along with other government officials, visited the Institute to observe their current earthquake research activities, prompted by a series of recent earthquakes in Ethiopia.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the visit followed an emergency meeting of the Disaster Risk Management Council, which focused on immediate actions to address the earthquake incidents. The government has relocated over 58,000 citizens to temporary shelters as a precautionary measure against the increasing hazards of earthquakes.
During his visit, Deputy Prime Minister Tiruneh emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s preparedness for seismic events. He stated that strengthened actions have been initiated in response to the recent earthquakes. The government is currently implementing plans in affected areas, which include organizing infrastructure, providing temporary shelter, and facilitating humanitarian support.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of scientific research in improving earthquake preparedness. “Our earthquake early warning preparedness and response depend on our existing technology, scientific research, analysis, and forecasting capabilities,” he said. He noted the encouraging progress observed at the Institute, which is dedicated to advancing knowledge in geophysics and space science.
Moreover, the government aims to bolster research institutions by investing in modern technology and recruiting qualified personnel. This initiative is intended to build a robust foundation for both short-term responses and long-term national preparedness against natural disasters.
