College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture Graduates Humane Education Trainees
Addis Ababa University (AAU), College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA) graduated 102 trainees for the fourth time educated in International Certificate in Humane Education (ICHE) and Alumni Formation Program at the Debre Zeit (Bishoftu) campus on December 22, 2022.
Hika Waqtole (Associate Professor), Dean of the College, mentioned in his opening speech that AAU is the oldest university in Ethiopia and CVMA is the first of its kind in the country. He explained that the College is also ranked second in Africa and thirty-fifth in the world, he added.
According to the dean, the college has been playing its part providing the trainees by rendering this training through its community service program, which is one of the three main activities of AAU.
Assoc. Prof. Hika, congratulated the graduates and urged them to apply their skills by serving the community including animal care based on the knowledge they acquired from the College and get satisfaction from the commitment they forward to their people.
Hanna Zewdu (PhD), the coordinator of the project, explained that the ICHE program is carried out with the support of SPANA (the Society for Protection of Animals Abroad), a charitable institution established by a British mother and her child.
In addition to the training, Dr. Hanna added that the project serves the local community in animal feed and medical services; provides support for the veterinary clinic of the college that found in its campus.
According to Dr. Hanna, the objective of the training for the graduates of the day is for healthy handling and care for animals of the society which cannot be reached by the human resources that the college produces through formal education and research. The training was provided to volunteer primary school teachers from different areas for five to six months, she added.
The guest of honor, Tola Beriso (PhD), Head of Education Bureau of Oromia Regional Government, in his speech stated that well trained human capital among other pillars is needed to ensure the development of the country.
He appreciated the commitment of AAU and its College (CVMA) in particular what they have been doing in short and long term trainings to outreach the rural community at large in different services.
Mrs. Roman Alemayehu (a teacher from ICHE Training Project) revealed that the training was given to primary school teachers from various locations while they were on their jobs. Participants who completed the course and submitted service learning project were given certificates.
