CFA Agreement Takes Effect, Promising Fair Use of Nile Resources and Enhanced Cooperation Among Basin States

Addis Ababa: The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ethiopia highlighted the official implementation of the Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA), marking a significant stride towards rectifying historical disparities and ensuring fair resource distribution among Nile Basin States.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs celebrated the formal commencement of the CFA on October 13, 2024. This landmark agreement, achieved after more than a decade of negotiations, is seen as a crucial step towards fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among the nations sharing the Nile waters. The ministry praised the perseverance and collaborative efforts of the state parties involved in bringing this framework to fruition.

The CFA establishes that each Nile Basin State has the sovereign right to use the waters within its territory, adhering to principles that ensure equitable usage aligns with the needs of fellow basin states. Ethiopia, expressing confidence in the agreement, an
