Call for Stronger Institutions to Tackle Fraud in Ghana

Accra – Makers and Partners (MAP), a leading chartered accountancy firm, has emphasized the importance of strengthening institutions to effectively combat fraud and corruption. This call was made by Mr. Alfred Aryee, Partner at MAP, during the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) Fraud Conference in Accra. The conference, themed ‘Winning the Fight against Fraud and Corruption in Ghana, A Collective Responsibility’, focused on enhancing collaboration among various stakeholders to address fraud issues in the country.

According to Ghana News Agency, the fight against corruption requires collective effort and the empowerment of relevant institutions with skills to identify and tackle fraud. He highlighted that as part of MAP’s corporate social responsibility, the firm has been providing free training in forensic audit to state institutions to bolster their capacity. This initiative aims at enhancing the Internal Audit Function of these institutions to better combat corruption.

Additionally, Mr. John Awuah, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Banks, and guest speaker at the conference, stressed the need for fair and transparent processes in policy and resource allocation decisions. He pointed out the necessity for individuals in both public and private sectors to be well-informed and committed to eradicating corruption. Mr. Awuah also touched on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (ACT 989), emphasizing the importance of compliance and timely responses to information requests. He advocated for clear guidelines on withholding sensitive information and urged for transparency in national expenditure and resource allocation.

The conference, organized as part of the International Fraud Awareness Week by the ACFE Ghana Chapter, aimed to evaluate Ghana’s stance on fraud and foster stronger partnerships to mitigate its impact. The ACFE, as the world’s largest anti-fraud organization, plays a crucial role in reducing business fraud globally. The conference served as a platform to reinforce the commitment of various stakeholders, including MAP and the Ghana Association of Banks, in their ongoing efforts to combat fraud and corruption in Ghana.
