Baringo: University Students To Undergo Mentorship Programme
Baringo Central Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Monicah Ithatwa has announced that the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) is set to organise a mentorship programme for all university and college students from the region.
Ithatwa said the day-long meetings, which will be held between June and August across the four divisions, are geared towards nurturing positive values, attitudes, and skills in order to help them make informed choices in life.
The DCC made the remarks during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations at Timboiywo Primary School grounds in Sacho Ward, where she stated that the programme is part of their corporate social responsibility.
Ithatwa, who was accompanied by Sub County Administrator Geoffrey Kimaiyo, regretted that the youth at this current age have lost social values, which are crucial in making them responsible people in the future.
‘We are urging those students on a long holiday to attend in large numbers because we have approached mentors who will talk to them so t
hat when they return to their various institutions, they are well informed,’ she said.
The DCC took the opportunity to urge elders and the clergy to take a leading role in guiding the youth to facilitate their growth and development.
Kimaiyo highlighted the challenges the boy child was facing, noting that some of them are no longer participating in communal activities.
‘Let us encourage our youth, especially the boy child, to attend the various places of worship and parents to talk with their kids openly because good behaviour starts at home and not in school,’ he said.
The Administrator, at the same time, called for community responsibility and avoidance of overprotecting children who end up throwing tantrums when they don’t get what they want.
Director General of Public Investments and Portfolio Management Lawrence Kibet, in his remarks, urged parents not only to invest in their children but to follow up on what they are doing in order to correct them when they have swerved.
Kibet argued that children
will feel motivated when parents encourage and guide them throughout their upbringing.
