African Peace, Security Architecture Technical, Political Meeting Underway in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa: The African Governance Architecture (AGA)-African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) is convening a technical and political meeting today in Addis Ababa. This significant gathering aims to create a roadmap for the 2025 flagship activities and evaluate the implementation outcomes of the previous year, 2024.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the meeting is anticipated to foster enhanced synergy and coordination among the platform’s members and facilitate interaction with strategic partners. Notable attendees include Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, who also serves as AUC Rapporteur of the AGA-APSA, and Ambassador Natalina Edward Mou, Permanent Representative of South Sudan and Chairperson of the PRC Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance.

The African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) comprises a comprehensive system of institutions, laws, and procedures dedicated to promoting peace and security across the African continent. It is strategically designed with a framework of structures, objectives, principles, and values, alongside decision-making processes that address the prevention, management, and resolution of crises and conflicts. APSA also plays a crucial role in post-conflict reconstruction and development.

The foundation of APSA is rooted in the Protocol of the Peace and Security Council (PSC), which was adopted in July 2002 in Durban and became effective in December 2003. This protocol outlines the various components of APSA and their associated responsibilities. Subsequent documents have been developed to further refine and streamline APSA’s implementation strategy.

At the heart of APSA’s operations is the PSC, supported by several key structures. These include the Commission, the Panel of the Wise, the Continental Early Warning System (CEWS), the African Standby Force (ASF), and the Peace Fund, all of which contribute significantly to fulfilling the PSC’s mandate across Africa.
