Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s First Lady Commits to Supporting Para-Sports in Africa

ACCRA – Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has pledged her commitment to prioritizing Para-Sports in Africa. This announcement came during a courtesy call by Mr. Samson Deen, the President of the Africa Paralympic Committee (APC), who visited to discuss the development of Para-Sports across the continent.

According to Ghana News Agency, Para-Sports and the African Para Games embody an inclusive spirit, recognizing sports as a powerful tool for promoting harmony and understanding among diverse groups. She emphasized the role of sports in inspiring and uniting people, highlighting the remarkable abilities and resilience of athletes with disabilities. Mrs. Tinubu expressed her belief in the collective responsibility to ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to excel and be recognized for their talents and achievements.

In her role as Grand Patron, she committed to supporting individuals and organizations associated with the African Para Games and Para-Sports. The First Lady thanked the APC President for his vision in identifying the office of the First Ladies in Africa as a leading force in promoting and developing Para Sports and the African Para Games across member nations.

Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, acknowledged Mrs. Tinubu’s dedication to the causes of youth, women, and men. Meanwhile, the APC President briefed her on the history of para-sports in the region, detailing the evolution from the African Sports Confederation of the Disabilities (ASCOD) formed in 1987 in Algeria, to its renaming as the African Paralympic Committee in 2001. He highlighted the APC’s role as the governing body of the Paralympic Movement in Africa, with 48 full member countries.
