AAU’s Students Career Development Centre (SCDC) Hosts Career Expo

SCDC of Addis Ababa University (AAU) and dereja.com collaboratively have organized a one-day Career Expo in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Skills and Young Africa Works at Sidist Kilo Main Campus on July 01/2022.

Mathewos Ensermu (PhD) Vice President for Administration and Student Services of AAU, in his opening remark said that the University is opening its own office to enable the graduates to learn about life skills and industry ethics and build their entrepreneurial culture.

According to Dr. Mathewos, AAU has strengthened its cooperation with various partner organizations and employers to enhance graduates’ industrial skills in addition to the academic and practical education given to them.

“One of the partner organizations, dereja.com, in collaboration with AAU, today held a Job Fair in the same campus. Dereja.com is doing its part to connect our graduates with the industry so as to grow and expand the employment rate,” he added.

As stated by Dr. Mathewos, the University is working hard to create a quality productive workforce in collaboration with industries, employers and partner organizations. “To address this need, SCDC in collaboration with dereja.com is organizing a Career Expo that will bring graduates and employers together for the fifth time,” Dr. Mathewos insisted.

Dr. Mathewos further said that the Centre is working with dereja.com and other organizations to provide students with soft skills and entrepreneurship trainings in collaboration with all colleges and institutes to enable students to excel in various fields.

Kassu Jilcha (PhD), Director for SCDC, told to the staff reporter that more than seventy employer organizations attended the job fair organized by the Centre in collaboration with dereja.com, thereby increasing the employment rate of graduates.

The director noted that the presence of a large number of employers and the presence of more than 2,000 graduates this year, as well as the attendance of former unemployed students, made the exhibition unique.

“It is a huge Job Fair. It is a Career exhibition and a great opportunity for our students to secure employment and gain practical experience and knowledge. It is also a good opportunity for our industries to hire highly qualified students from AAU,” he remarked.

W/ro Siham Ayele, Program Director for dereja.com, in her speech said, “Students find it difficult to secure jobs after their graduation as most of them graduate with little or no awareness of the job market or the skills required. To fill these gaps, Dereja provides employability skills training to young people that help prepare them for the world of work.”

Siham further said that such career expos are preceded by a job fair clinic, which takes place one month prior to the expos. “Through these clinics, students are trained how to write CVs, application letters, prepare for job interviews, and understand how to search for jobs.”
