AAU Runs a Workshop on Lessons and Experiences Sharing with HORN

A Workshop held on lessons and experiences sharing between Addis Ababa University (AAU) and One Health (OH) Regional Network for the Horn of Africa (HORN) to equip AAU’s senior management at Sarem Hotel this morning, on the 17th of June 2021.

The Workshop focused on laying foundations for understanding OH research, promoting the merits of HORN’s OH research, and providing opportunities to draw the experiences of HORN’s OH research to facilitate AAU’s thematic research undertaking.

Different researchers and professionals, working around the health sector, presented experiences and findings that tried to indicate facts what changes have so far been observed and solutions recommended alleviating the challenges in the region.

The presentations indicated that One Health (OH) is the concept that the health and the well-being of people are linked to the heath of their animals and the environment.

These people with animal-environment firm links are nowhere more true than in the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia) where many people’s livelihoods are highly dependent on livestock, presentations in the experience sharing workshop mentioned.

As indicated in the presentations, livestock production and human health and wellbeing in the Horn of Africa can be increased through research, leading to improved agricultural systems, more food and less malnutrition, more financial resilience, and better detection, diagnosis, prevention and control of diseases.

It was also stated that OH research conducted in three development challenge topics and recommended vital solutions on: disease and disease control; agricultural systems, livelihoods and economics; and health in the changing world.

Following presentations delivered by Dr. Siobhan Mor, Professor Daniel Asrat and Dr. Samson Wakuma, different views, questions and opinions were reflected from the participants of the Workshop.

HORN is a multidisciplinary international partnership for University of Liverpool (UK), University of Addis Ababa, University of Nairobi, Somaliland, Hamelmalo College of Agriculture (Eritrea), iGAD and other national and international organizations and NGO’s.
