AAU Launches Training on Management in the Higher Education
Addis Ababa University (AAU’s) Institute of Educational Research (IER), Centre for Higher Education Research and Training (CHERT), has launched a month long training from January 25 to February 25, 2023 focused on Leadership and Management in Higher Education (LMHE) at African Leadership Excellence Academy, Sululta.
Belay Hagos (PhD), Director of IER, in an exclusive interview said that the training is conducted for college deans and institute directors of AAU to build the capacity of those in charge in terms of management and leadership skills and to enable the middle level leaders of the University to prepare them for better management.
According to Dr. Belay, as AAU is transitioning to an autonomous administration, the training provided to the directors and the deans can effectively facilitate the transformation process of the University to achieve the goal.
The trainees will be given certificate of proficiency; after this, a university teacher who has not been trained in management and leadership skills and who has not taken the certificate in this profession cannot be a college dean or head of an institution, Dr. Belay asserted.
Berhanu Abera (PhD), Head at CHERT, stated that the training is prepared to improve the out-dated higher education leadership skills in management and leadership roles so as to increase the knowledge of scholars for better accomplishment of tasks.
He told to the staff reporter that 25 college deans and institute directors are participating in the training which will have face-to-face training for twelve days and specialized training through technology-assisted e-learning in the rest of the days.
Dr. Berhanu finally noted that the training will help in making the university’s autonomy effective in the process; especially the teachers who are in charge of the institution’s management will enrich themselves with the knowledge of official duties including preparation of strategic plan for the University.
