AAU Centre for Human Rights Launches Training on the IDPs’ Privileges

Addis Ababa University (AAU) Centre for Human Rights launched a five-days long intensive training on the rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Sarem International Hotel since November 22, 2021.

Fasil Mulatu (PhD), a head at Centre for Human Rights, in his opening speech said that the reason for the current need for training on the IDPs is to create awareness on how to assist displaced people, who are currently in dire straits due to the on-going conflict in the country.

Zelalem Tefera (PhD) from IES said that various professionals from different offices including Ethiopian Red Cross Society and fire-fighters were invited to participate the training that enabled senior disaster response and rehabilitation professionals to understand the historical causes and the on-going processes of displacement.

According to Zelalem (PhD), as much as safeguarding national peace and security is the key to preventing internal displacement, the government must work in coordination with the local community and aid agencies to intensify their efforts with due attention focused on IDPs.

Desalegn Amsalu (PhD) from Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) said that displacement caused by development or natural disasters cannot be avoided but can be reduced and controlled to an extent.

“In order to reduce or eliminate the displacement caused by conflict, it is necessary to first identify the causes of displacement,” Desalegn added.
